New Year, New You? Your 2025 School Communicator Action Plan

It’s a new year, and you’ve got a fresh slate—2025 is here, and it’s time to take stock of your school communications game plan. You’re the multitasking, message-crafting, community-connecting powerhouse, but even superheroes need a moment to reflect and recharge.

What worked last year? What didn’t? What’s that one skill or goal you keep saying, “I’ll get to it eventually?” Let’s make “eventually” happen this year. This guide is your chance to think big, focus your energy, and map out a plan to make 2025 your best year yet. Grab a pen or open a copy of our doc—we’re about to have some fun!

Step 1: Reflect on 2024

Take a moment to think back on the past year. Answer these prompts to capture your wins and lessons learned:

What were your biggest successes in 2024?
(Examples: Launched a new newsletter, grew social media engagement, improved crisis response times.)

What feedback did you receive from families or staff?
(Look for common themes in surveys, emails, or informal conversations.)

What was the most challenging part of your role last year?
(Examples: Keeping up with new platforms, managing work-life balance, crafting consistent messaging.)

Step 2: Identify Your Strengths

Every communicator has unique superpowers. Use these questions to uncover yours:

What part of your job do you enjoy most?
(Examples: Writing newsletters, designing graphics, building relationships with the community.)

What skills or tools do you feel most confident using?
(Examples: Social media management, public speaking, email marketing platforms.)

What have others complimented you on?
(Examples: Creativity, organization, calmness under pressure.)

Step 3: Pinpoint Areas of Growth

Growth is part of the journey! Improving in an area doesn’t mean taking it all on yourself—delegating and dropping things that no longer serve you or your community is equally valid.

What skills or tools do you want to master in 2025?
(Examples: Video editing, analytics, storytelling techniques.)

What tasks or responsibilities make you feel stuck or stressed?
(Examples: Navigating new tech, managing a crisis with little training.)

Where do you feel your team or district could improve?
(Examples: Communication flow, timeliness, engaging underrepresented voices.)

Step 4: Set Your 2025 Focus Areas

Based on your reflections, choose 2-3 focus areas for the year. Here’s a sample list to inspire you:

Strengthen Your Storytelling: Learn how to craft compelling stories about students, staff, and community impact.

Expand Family Engagement: Develop strategies to reach families who are less involved or harder to engage.

Master Analytics: Dive into tools like GA4, Looker Studio, and Meta platforms to boost data-driven decisions.

Invest in Professional Development: Attend workshops, join webinars, or earn certifications to build your expertise.

Crisis Preparedness: Update your crisis communications plan and practice scenarios with your team.

Step 5: Create an Action Plan

You’ve chosen your focus areas, but those are BIG categories. Let’s narrow it down. For each focus area, write down one specific, actionable step you can take. Here’s a few examples:

Focus Area: Strengthen storytelling

    • Attend a webinar or workshop on storytelling techniques.
    • Create a monthly series highlighting staff or student achievements.
    • Partner with your media team to produce a high-quality video showcasing your district’s impact.

Focus Area: Master analytics

    • Learn the basics of GA4 or Looker Studio through a free online course.
    • Set up dashboards for key metrics on platforms like Meta or your website CMS.
    • Conduct a quarterly review of your engagement data and identify patterns or trends.

Focus Area: Expand family engagement

    • Plan and host a coffee chat or town hall event to connect with families face-to-face.
    • Send out a survey to identify the preferred communication methods of families.
    • Develop a multilingual communication strategy to reach underrepresented groups.

Step 6: Set Timelines

Once you’ve chosen your focus area, it’s time to make it happen. For each actionable step, decide in which quarter you’ll tackle it. Breaking things down into smaller goals makes it manageable and keeps your momentum going all year.

What Does 2025 Look Like for You?

Thinking through this information might not give the same immediate rush as changing your hair color or zip code, but you don’t need to reinvent yourself to make 2025 a great year. Instead, start by filling out your 2025 school communicator profile and set your focus. Small, intentional  actions can lead to big, meaningful results.
